Funko Fusion Review (PS5) – A Worthy First Attempt to Bringing the Plastic to Life

Over the last few years, the Funko craze has swept the world, with everyone able to show off their nerdiest loves in the nerdiest fashion, with these tiny little plastic collectibles becoming the next big thing. I myself have an extraordinary amount peppered around the house, so when Funko Fusion was announced, it was a no-brainer to check it out.

Coming in at 22 IPs (so far), Funko Fusion does its best to nail the feel of so many of our favorite franchises, from Shaun of the ***** to Battlestar Galactica, He-Man to Umbrella Academy, and many more.

A Labor of Love

It’s clear within the first few minutes of playing Funko Fusion that 1010 Games absolutely love the source material(s), both with regards to Funko itself, and the various IPs present.

When starting the game, you’re given the choice of where to start, and like many, I expect, I chose Hot Fuzz. Seeing the iconic village of Sandford brought to life in a video game was nothing short of incredible, and the little Easter Eggs thrown in for good measure made this 30-something, horror-comedy-loving man’s day.

From the Easter Eggs to the general mission structure, the game does a fantastic job of making you feel like you’re in Sandford, and it’s not just Hot Fuzz it does that with. All of the 22 IPs included in the game have standout moments, from fully fledged levels to little areas unlocked with special tools, and some just an unlockable figure to parade around town with, there’s legitimately something for everyone.

This is where Funko Fusion excels, in the basic yet in-depth representation of areas and environments we’ve grown to love. It, however, does falter with some odd choices in gameplay and modes.

Fan-Service Out of the Wazoo

Bafflingly, and the biggest error it has, is that it doesn’t offer a couch co-op option. In a next-gen title from the same guys that originally brought us the LEGO games when they were at TT Games, the decision to keep multiplayer online only is odd, even if they support four-player chaos.

Secondly, the combat itself is a little lackluster. You may feel like the character you’re playing doesn’t really matter, and I’d be lying if I didn’t think exactly that. Most weapons feel identical, be they melee or guns, resulting in some disappointing and often boring combat, and conversely, the difficulty gets ramped up in random spikes. You’ll be easily carving your way through the mission, with everything too easy, before a random spot or two per level that’ll seem insurmountable.

Funko Fusion does have some rewarding puzzles, and just like the Easter Eggs present, you’ll spend just the right amount of time looking around and figuring out the solutions, with some puzzles spanning the entire level, and others only contained to a room.

Some of the smallest puzzles were puzzles only in name, with a simple tracing of a power line or searching for a clue, but having to remember what tool to use from hours earlier in the game is a neat way to callback to your early experiences, and the variety (and size) of puzzles will stop you getting bored.

Final Thoughts

Funko Fusion has everything you need in a platformer. Puzzles, combat, and interesting level design. The added bonus of reliving some of our favorite IPs of years gone by more than makes up for some of the downsides and issues with the game, and 1010 Game’s promise to support and update the game for the foreseeable will please many.

As a first attempt at a new IP, one based on the plastic craze sweeping the Earth, Funko Fusion ticks a lot of boxes. With some tighter combat it could have been even better, but just like the physical Funkos, it has something for everyone.

Funko Fusion Review (PS5) – A Worthy First Attempt to Bringing the Plastic to Life

Funko Fusion is an easy-to-pick-up, difficult-to-master platformer that’ll please fans of all sorts of pop culture, but lacks in some obvious genre inclusions like split-screen co-op and more ******* variety.
