Contractor worker fatality at Rio Tinto’s giant Simandou iron ore project in Guinea

A worker has ***** while working on Rio Tinto’s under-construction Simandou iron ore project in the West ******* nation of Guinea.

The mining giant announced late Monday that an employee from a contracting company had ***** following an incident at the SimFer port site in Morebaya in the country’s south on Saturday.

Rio did not disclose any further details about the fatality.

“Our deepest condolences go to the family, friends, colleagues and communities affected by this tragedy,” said Rio chief Jakob Stausholm

“Our focus is on offering all possible support during this difficult time.

“Activity at the SimFer port site has been suspended and we are working with our partners and relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation.

“We will continue taking all necessary steps to achieve the highest standards of health and safety at our sites.”

The massive $9.5 billion Simandou mine — dubbed the “Pilbara *******” — is set to come online next year and deliver 120 million tonnes of iron ore a year at a high grade of around 65 per cent.

The project has a complex ownership structure.

Rio holds a 53 per cent stake in the Simfer ****** venture with ******** metals giant Chinalco.

Simfer owns half of the overall Simandou project and the other half is owned by a consortium of ******** and Singaporean companies.

The Guinean Government holds an overarching 15 per cent stake across both halves of the project.

Rio’s iron ore foray into ******* could spell long-term trouble for the Pilbara region’s mantle as the world’s premier producer of the steel-making input.
