West *********** all-rounder Mitch Marsh says he will be ready to bowl against India come West Test

West *********** all-rounder Mitch Marsh says he’ll be ready to bowl as many overs as Pat Cummins needs against India this summer despite not bowling in WA’s Sheffield Shield clash with Tasmania and missing the ODI series with Pakistan.

In the lead into the second game of the shield season, the hulking power-hitting stated he would look to bowl in the four-day clash at the WACA to start building his loads ahead of the West Test in late November.

However, he went unsighted at the crease with fellow all-rounder Aaron Hardie providing the handful of overs Marsh was potentially pencilled in for as the three-time reigning champions scored an important home victory.

Marsh reiterated to Channel 7 on Sunday that he’d be ready to fill any ***** he is needed for.

“My bowling hasn’t really been spoken about for years, and all of a sudden, Greeny goes down, and now my bowling is the most important facet of my game, apparently,” he said.

“But I’ll build towards that first Test and I’ll bowl as much as Patty needs me to bowl if required. I feel like the numbers over the last few years aren’t what I’d like but it is an important part.”

*********** coach Andrew McDonald is also backing Marsh to be ready to bowl but doesn’t expect him to shoulder a significant bowling load.

“I wouldn’t call it a significant bowling load that we’d be asking him to perform, but I think he can contribute. There’s no doubt about that,” he told the ABC.

“He’s had a few little physical setbacks after England with a back flare up but we’re not imagining that will derail his ability to bowl this summer.

“And if you look at the Cameron Green space, and that’s probably what we’re saying the gap is, on average, he’s bowled 13 overs a Test match for us, so we believe through the part-timers and the allrounders – like Travis Head can have an impact as well – we’re looking for 13 overs a game.

“We feel as though we can find that. For the quicks, last summer was a massive outlier for them to get through all of them, so we believe there will be some rotation in that as well.”

Marsh also couldn’t keep the relief out of his voice when discussing Cummins confirming he wouldn’t be elevated from six to open the batting against Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj.

However, he sat firmly on the fence when asked about state teammate Cam Bancroft’s chances of making a Test return.

“I think Pat has already said Heady and I are out of the race, and I was happy to hear that,” he said jovially.

“I’m happy where I am.

“I’ve shied away from naming anyone who should be in the team, but as we know, Bangers has been really good in that opener position over the last few years, so whoever the sectors choose, I’m sure they’ll do the job.”
