(WFLA) — This is not a good time to be forced to find a new home, especially if your current one survived the storms just fine. But a senior couple in Apollo Beach said they are suddenly could be facing eviction after years of living in the same place. Pinellas County seniors who evacuated for Helene told they will return after 2025 Linda Wylie has called the Apollo Beach community home for more than a decade. She said she is living off a fixed income. She was told in a letter she must be out of her home in January. “We have nowhere to go, and we don’t have family here,” Wylie said. Wylie said she received the notice from a maintenance man who came by to fix something at the property. “He had to come out the next day,” Wylie said. “He goes, ‘I have something in the car for you and you are not going to like it.’” The formal notice from the property management company states “all rent must be paid through the end of your lease agreement.” However, adding to the confusion, the date on her paperwork doesn’t match up. “According to this until Jan. 6, but with our paperwork, it’s not January 2024; it’s January 6th, 2025, it makes no sense,” Wylie said. 8 On Your Side reached out to Tricon, the property management company that sent the notice. They issued the following statement: “At Tricon Residential, we place high importance on ensuring that our employees treat residents with respect, empathy, and attentiveness in every interaction. We believe that respect is a shared commitment, as outlined in our Resident’s Bill of Rights. In instances where this mutual respect is compromised, especially in ways that could affect the safety and well-being of our team members and vendor partners, we take thoughtful action to maintain a positive environment“ We took Wylie’s concerns to real estate attorney Gary De Pury prior to receiving the statement from Tricon. “So, the options are going to be to renew their lease but probably at a higher rent, or they are going to have to move and find something else, and that is going to be difficult in this current climate that we probably going to experience with the current storms,” De Pury said.
