Payne dodged oil residue and debris to clock a lap time of one minute 10.150 seconds in the dying minutes to outdo Saturday’s race winner Cam Waters on the Surfers Paradise street circuit on Sunday. The Grove Racing star will be the last driver to have a solo attempt in the top-10 shootout at 12.35pm (AEDT) ahead of Sunday’s 250km race. The 15-minute qualifying session was pushed back by five minutes due to an eight-car pile-up in the previous Aussie Racing Cars category between turn 11 and turn 12. The session was then paused for 10 minutes under a red flag after then ninth-placed Andre Heimgartner sent his Chevrolet Camaro into the barrier at turn 12. Brad Jones Racing driver Heimgartner will start the race in 17th after his fastest lap time was deleted for bringing out the red flag. Payne and Waters will follow Red Bull young **** Broc Feeney in the shootout, while Waters’ Tickford teammate Thomas Randle just missed out in 11th. Randle came second on Saturday’s race to secure the first Tickford one-two finish on the Gold Coast since 2017, with Feeney rounding out the podium. Championship leader Will Brown will also have a shot at pole position in sixth, after missing out on Saturday due to a ******. The final race of the penultimate round gets underway at 3.15pm (AEDT).
