Stampede in SoHo leaves grandmother hospitalized for her birthday

MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) – A terrifying stampede in SoHo was caught on camera, leaving a grandmother hospitalized for her birthday.

Rosalyn Landsman and her husband were knocked to the ground by a half-dozen fleeing suspects and briefly left unconscious. The men were running from police who were confiscating counterfeit goods on Canal Street.

“They said five to six months, my bones will be back to where they were,” Rosalyn said.

The couple was walking along Canal Street Wednesday afternoon when a shocking video showed about a half-dozen suspects running from the police. The couple was knocked to the ground, and Rosalyn was trampled on the sidewalk as the suspects made their getaway.

“My husband crawled over and protected me, and then the police came,” Rosalyn added.

The police were not far behind, having just raided an unlicensed vending camp in SoHo.

“They just pick up their blankets and run like *****. They ran, and we were in the way,” she said.

The grandmother suffered four fractured ribs, a punctured lung, a broken clavicle and needed stitches in her head.

“Thank goodness she’ll be OK. But these guys caused this act,” said NYPD Deputy Commissioner Kaz Daughtry.

On Friday evening, PIX11 News visited the intersection of Canal and Lafayette, where the incident occurred, and found the sidewalk shops still open.

“It’s taking away from the legitimate businesses in the neighborhood,” Daughtry remarked.

After speaking with Daughtry at One Police Plaza, he invited PIX11 News to watch a small army of his officers bust the ******** businesses again.

“Promises made, promises kept. We’re going to come and take their stuff. ******** counterfeit goods,” Daughtry said.

While police didn’t find the suspects who hurt the Landsmans, they did confiscate more counterfeit goods, seizing millions of dollars worth so far this year. This is part of an initiative to restore the quality of life in business districts across the city.

“You’re talking about protecting some pocketbooks and willing to step over people for a pocketbook—is that what the city wants?” Martin Landsman asked.

Rosalyn Landsman added, “People have absolutely no regard for others.”
