The quick-***** Q&A session that revealed what makes Stokes tick

Ryan Stokes was put on the spot at the end of a Q&A session at The West ***********’s Leadership Matters breakfast, with journalist Ben Harvey peppering him with a barrage of quick-***** questions on a wide-range of controversial topics.

The rule of engagement was that Mr Stokes had to offer the first answer that sprang to mind.

This is how the exchange unfolded:

Harvey: Most admired business person?

Stokes: I’ve a lot of regard for what Charlie Munger, Warren Buffett do but I’d say Elon Musk to be CEO of so many companies that are leading the world in technology I think that’s just remarkable and he will probably start changing the world in so many ways just through his drive and intellect.

Harvey: What’s the worst thing about wealth?

Stokes: Well it ain’t going to make you happy! There’s a high risk of hubris that comes with that but we’re all human, we’re all the same.

Harvey: Have you ever watched Succession?

Stokes: Yes

Harvey: Do you recognise anyone from there?

Stokes: Ha ha, I loved the show, I thought it was great.

Harvey: What’s the first thing that comes to mind when I say ‘Anthony Albanese’?

Stokes: I’d say genuine.

Harvey: If you had to be stranded on a desert island with Gina (Rinehart) or Twiggy (Andrew Forrest) who would it be? Don’t answer that! It’s loaded. If you had to wear just one type of boot, would it be Rossi’s or RM’s?

Stokes: I think Caterpillar boots.

Harvey: Most interesting person in your life?

Stokes: Claire, my wife. She’s very good at calling me at any points she starts to see any inner hubris.

Harvey: Biggest economic threat to Australia? Apart from Albo — joke!

Stokes: You kind of think China or what’s going to happen globally but I think to be honest, I think it’s ourselves. I think it’s this regulatory environment right now — green tape, labour regulation, stifled productivity — that’s the biggest threat to Australia.

Harvey: First thing that comes to mind when I say ‘Peter Dutton’.

Stokes: Consistent.

Harvey: One thing you wish young Ryan did do?

Stokes: More reading.

Harvey: One thing you wish young Ryan didn’t do?

Stokes: I mean there’s lots. Not swear the small stuff.

Harvey: In six month’s time interest rates will be…?

Stokes: Flat, declining, I still hope they’re going down.

Harvey: Complete this sentence: “If I were chief executive of Channel 9 I would…”

Stokes: Focus on the business.

Harvey: First thing that comes to mind when I say ‘Roger Cook’.

Stokes: Absolutely committed to WA.

Harvey: The next prime minister of Australia will be…?

Stokes: The prime minister!

Harvey: The most annoying thing about modern business?

Stokes: I think the speed and pace is a function today — that’s just the nature of it, it is 24/7 — I wouldn’t say that’s necessarily annoying but there’s no off.

Harvey: Most annoying thing about having three kids under six?

Stokes: They make you feel old. Nothing annoying to be honest but they don’t take instruction!

Harvey: Most annoying thing about your father (Kerry Stokes)?

Stokes: He’s most often right and that’s frustrating at times and thankfully most of the time we’re aligned but he’s an incredible instinct for things and an uncanny instinct for things.
