The Bridge Curse 2: The Extrication Review (PC)

The Bridge Curse 2: The Extrication seems like a regular good old-fashioned horror game. But little did I know that I was in for a ride when I first booted it up. As I kept progressing, the game proved to be a rollercoaster, it didn’t let me rest for a minute. I was either running away from a foe or deliberating about the game’s plot and its themes.

Some subjects in the game are incredibly disturbing and might trigger some people. This includes graphic visuals, occult, and a lot more stuff that might be unsettling. However, none of them feel forces in the ********* of genres Softstar Entertainment has presented with The Bridge Curse 2: The Extrication.

The game has almost equal parts horror, mystery, thrill, and puzzles. But what does that entail for the average horror enthusiast? Does that mean that the game isn’t scary or is it more of a puzzle-solving title?

The Bridge Curse 2: The Extrication is available on Steam and releases for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S & Nintendo Switch on October 24, 2024.

One (Disturbing) Thing Leads to Another at Wen Hua University in the Bridge Curse 2: The Extrication

At Wen Hua University in Taiwan, a girl was brutally murdered on campus, known as the Da Ren *******. It has been decades since the incident took place. Students who are part of the university’s film club decide to make a horror short film based on the incident.

All of this is revealed as soon as you hit play and forms the central plot. However, as you begin playing through all of the four playable characters in the game, things become more and more twisted. You find out that the Da Ren ******* is only one piece of the puzzle and unsettling events begin taking place on the campus.

Something that I enjoyed to the fullest was the game’s progression. It came as a surprise to me as my previous experiences with progression in horror video games haven’t been positive. This time, however, I was both nervous and excited to know what come next.

The layered plot, the gameplay loop, and the design for various puzzles felt extremely refreshing and kept me hooked. I had to scratch my head a couple of times to figure out some mysteries, but unlike Tormenture I was able to figure out how to get from point A to B. Most importantly, none of them felt like chores and I even had fun while solving them.

The World of the Bridge Curse 2: The Extrication Is Well-Designed but Lacks Horrifying Oomph

This doll is one of the only things that you will remember if you play The Bridge Curse 2: The Extrication.

The game’s presentation is phenomenal. The sound design is excellent. You hear the eerie voices in the game’s world if you are playing while wearing headphones. The sounds are enough to make you feel creeped out. The visuals look just a tad dated because the game is a cross-generation release, but they are far from an eye-sore.

Now, I am someone who gets scared easily but I wasn’t this time, which is a negative for a horror game. The game builds up well after the prologue and I was expecting to have my socks knocked off. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen.

That isn’t to say that I didn’t enjoy Softstar Entertainment’s title but it felt more so like an adventure-thriller title garnished with some scary elements. By all means the game is gripping, but if you boot it up expecting it to feel like Silent Hill 2, that will most likely not happen.

Something else that I found immersion-breaking was the voice-acting feeling incredibly corny in English. There were also some mistranslated texts in the subtitle and I couldn’t help but laugh at how caricaturish some character’s voices felt. This isn’t a biggie as the game was arguably intended to be played in *********, but it is cringeworthy in certain moments.

Well, firstly I would like to give props to the game for blending adventure and survival horror so well. The gameplay is fun, and so is solving puzzles. But all of it appeared more unsettling than scary.

It doesn’t help that the game promises to be a full-fledged horror game. Forget screaming, I didn’t even gasp during my 6-ish hour playthrough. So if you want something that shakes you to the core or even something that makes you break a sweat, then this may not deliver.

However, if you are someone who finds horror games too scary and wants a title that provides a thrill and tops it off with creepy elements, then you may have a blast with Softstar Entertainment’s The Bridge Curse 2: The Extrication.
