Mota double downs Verona, earns Monza first Serie A win

An inspired Dany Mota has scored in each half for Monza to surprise Hellas Verona 3-0 and earn their first win in Serie A this season.

The Portuguese striker volleyed a superb opener after nine minutes and burst between two defenders to add a second in the 74th at the Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi.

Alessandro Bianco made it 3-0 with 11 minutes remaining to help Monza rise out of the relegation zone and into 16th spot on the 20-team table after eight rounds.

Monza were the last team to win this season, having registered four draws and three losses heading into the game.

They now sit just two points and three positions below Monday night’s opponents, Verona, who stay stuck in 13th place with nine points.

Verona have scored more second-half goals than any team bar league leaders Napoli (19 points) but were toothless in front of goal in front of their home fans.

Second-placed Inter Milan (17), Juventus (16) and AC Milan (14) currently occupy the other automatic Champions League places.
