‘Bowls for Soupie’ exhibition unveils works at Margaret River Heart ahead of big dinner

A gorgeous array of fine pottery is now showing at the Margaret River Heart as part of efforts to support the local Soupie.

Residents have until October 23 a chance to take in the exhibition featuring some of the region’s most skilled potters who have pitched in to support the volunteer kitchen, which is a mainstay of the Margaret River Community Centre.

All of the bowls are on ***** during the exhibition, which will culminate in a chance to put them to good use in an epic curry-and-dahl dinner on October 24 along with music, keynote speakers and an appearance from the Sacred World Music Choir.

Exhibition co-ordinator and artisan potter Ian Dowling said the Bowls for Soupie celebration gave potters a chance to do what they loved most.

“Knowing they will be used gives great satisfaction to the maker,” he said.

“Potters’ bowls are a primordial form, a container that not only holds the food you enjoy but has the feel of something that are gifts from our earth and *****.”

Dowling commended the various contributors to the event who approached the artform in unique ways.

“Local clay is an important part of many of these pots,” he said.

“This clay was first used to make mudbricks for many homes and other buildings in an earlier part of Margaret River’s history.”

A silent auction is also running throughout the exhibition, with 15 items curated along with a dinner set by Stuart McKay and standalone pieces from renowned potter Chester Nealie and local contributors such as Dariya Gratte.

The winning bids will be confirmed at the Soupie dinner on October 24 at 8pm.
