Thompson out of rain-marred Shanghai Masters

Australia’s Jordan Thompson is out of the rain-soaked Shanghai Masters after an upset straight sets second round loss to Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands.

Griekspoor, the world No.40, beat the 26th-seeded Thompson 6-3 6-2 on Monday at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena, with the *********** unable to break his opponent’s serve throughout their 75-minute encounter.

Thompson came close to securing the first break of the match but could not convert five break points in a marathon deuce game at 2-2 in the first set.

Both held serve from there until the Dutchman broke the *********** to 30 for a 5-3 lead before serving out for the set.

Griekspoor snatched an early break to 30 for a 2-1 lead in the second, then converted his second break point two games later for a decisive 4-1 advantage.

Thompson was outpointed on all stats, none more telling than his 39 percent of points won on his second serve compared with 58 percent for Griekspoor, who’ll play second seed Alexander Zverev in the third round.

Two days after starting, seventh-ranked Taylor ****** and 10th-ranked Grigor Dimitrov finally won through their second-round matches.

US Open finalist ****** had led 4-3 in the opening set against Frenchman Terence Atmane before rain suspended play on Saturday and washed out all outside court matches on Sunday.

On Monday, the 26-year-old ********* needed two tiebreakers to see off No.161-ranked Atmane 7-6 (4) 7-6 (5), with only one break of serve for each in the two hour, two minute match.

Dimitrov resumed on Monday with a set lead but down a break in the second against Zizou Bergs.

The No.73-ranked Belgian converted his advantage to take the second set before Dimitrov broke Bergs three times — for the loss of one of his own service games, to clinch the match 6-3 3-6 6-2.

Dimitrov will play *********** Alexei Popyrin in the third round.

Also, US Open semifinalist Frances Tiafoe routed Zhou Yi of China 6-2 6-4, while Roman Safiullin had a 6-4 6-2 win over Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan.
