Rene Martinez was charged with aggravated ******** causing serious bodily injury and ******** on a pregnant person after police allege he ran over 23-year-old Juan Flores Jr. around 2:20 a.m. Monday along the 1400 block of North Zaragoza and allegedly attacked his pregnant girlfriend after she confronted him about her suspicions he was involved. 1 seriously injured in pedestrian ****** in East El Paso Arrest documents show police obtained surveillance footage from the area surrounding Taco Tote, showing two groups of individuals fighting in the parking lot. Three people walked toward a ****** Ford Fusion in the parking lot when the other five appeared to throw a rock at it. Documents say it appeared the two groups were going to ****** before the Fusion drove away and later turned around and sped toward the group. Police allege the driver of the Fusion, later identified as Martinez, hit Flores, and Flores flew onto the hood of the car and attempted to hold on before he flew off and hit his head on the pavement. Flores was transported to Del Sol Medical Center for treatment of severe head trauma, where, according to Flores’s family, he ***** later in the day. Around 8 a.m., a pregnant woman arrived at ***** Station 6, located near Montwood High School, to report she’d been assaulted by her boyfriend, identified as Martinez. According to the woman, she is 37 weeks pregnant and became suspicious of Martinez after he arrived home late and appeared intoxicated. Upon being confronted, he said he’d taken a Xanax “bar” and claimed he never left the house. Documents say the woman attempted to take Martinez’s phone. That’s when he allegedly kicked her in the stomach and punched her. She says she went through his text messages and found messages indicating he’d been involved in a ******. She allegedly saw a text saying not to take the Fusion out and to keep it parked in the garage because police were looking for it after information was posted on FitFam that a vehicle matching that description was involved in a deadly ******. The woman went to the closest ***** station, where she was transported to the hospital for treatment of her injuries. The affidavit claims Martinez later admitted to police that he drove the car that struck Flores, and he got out of the car to check on him but drove off because he was scared. A formal charge against Martinez is pending, and it’s unclear if he will face additional charges due to Flores’ subsequent ******. He’s currently being held in the El Paso County Detention Center on bonds totaling more than $371,000. The documents do not identify the other individuals or witnesses involved in the initial altercation, and it’s unknown if anyone else will face charges. Police told KTSM they are not releasing Martinez’s mugshot due to an ongoing investigation.
