WA workers short-changed $600m in unpaid super

West Australians were short-changed $600 million in superannuation payments in one year with one in four underpaid, an industry analysis finds.

About 310,000 WA workers lost an average of $1930 each – more than the $1800 national amount of underpaid super – according to a Super Members Council analysis of tax office data.

The council says the data backs the Government’s push to have employers pay people’s superannuation at the same time as regular pay runs instead of every quarter.

Chief executive Mischa Schubert said a shift to payday super would modernise the system and should hugely reduce underpayments.

“Unpaid super locks too many Australians out of the full transformative benefits of the retirement system and leaves people poorer when they retire,” she said.

Overall, 2.8 million Australians were not paid a total of $5.1 billion in superannuation entitlements in 2021-22.

In WA, the average underpayments ranged from $1750 for workers in Tangney to $2210 for people in Forrest.

The Government announced last month that it would require employers to shift the timing of superannuation payments starting from July 2026.

But it has yet to put legislation for the move to Parliament, with a draft bill for consultation not expected until early next year.
