Premier Roger Cook attends Kalgoorlie Cup to formally announce million-dollar prize to attract more visitors

Premier Roger Cook has attended the race that stops the Goldfields to formally announce million-dollar prize money for a race set to bring more tourists to the region in coming years.

The new Kalgoorlie Cup initiative will see the State Government fund prize money for a $1 million Golden Saddle race to take place on the same day as the $150,000 Kalgoorlie Cup race.

Speaking at the Kalgoorlie Boulder Racing Club before the first race of the day, Mr Cook said he wants to ensure the city’s Race Round continues to go from “strength to strength”.

“Racing supports jobs, it supports economic activity, hundreds of jobs here in Kalgoorlie, as well as $54 million contribution towards the local and the Western *********** economy,” he said

“This will be the single biggest, most valuable slot racing race in regional Australia, and will represent a $1 million prize money which will create extra excitement and really just continue to energize this great racing carnival.

“We want to see Western Australians and people from outside the state come here to Kalgoorlie … we want them to really appreciate just how vibrant and wonderful the Goldfields (is).”

Mr Cook took the opportunity to meet with punters, both local the Kalgoorlie-Boulder and those from further afield.

He was joined on Saturday by Racing and Gaming Minister Paul Papalia would not reveal which horse he was backing for the iconic Kalgoorlie Cup while the Premier took advice from Kalgoorlie MP Ali Kent to back racehorse Red Cadillac.

Mr Papalia said the Golden Saddle race would “massively elevate” Kalgoorlie-Boulder as a tourism destination.

“It will get more eyeballs on screens, and people will see what the place has to offer … it will bring people for the race round,” he said.

“It will get more investment in Kalgoorlie-Boulder at this time, but it (will) also lift the awareness of this place as a tourism destination.”

The WA government has committed to funding the Golden Saddle Prize money for three years, starting in 2025 with a further $500,000 contribution to event promotion and tourism development.
