‘Action will be taken’: Labor ministers accept peaceful protest but warn ********* will not be tolerated

State Government ministers have backed in West Aussies’ right to protest, but have warned protesters that any ********* or display of ********** insignia will not be tolerated.

Ahead of a planned pro-Palestine protest in Perth on Saturday, Premier Roger Cook and Police Minister Paul Papalia both said there was no issue with “peaceful” protests.

“One of the reasons why we love to live in this great State is because we’re a peaceful community, we’re a democratic community,” Mr Cook told reporters in Kalgoorlie ahead of the Kalgoorlie Cup.

“It gives people the opportunity to protest, to express their views — but they can’t do it in a way which is harmful, and they can’t do it in a way which undermines the peaceful community in which we live.”

The Premier echoed Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong’s call for Aussies living in Lebanon to “take every opportunity to leave” the country while they can.

“I urge everyone to follow the instructions from the Minister for Foreign Affairs … and I’m so pleased the Commonwealth Government has put on those flights from Cyprus to really just make sure that we get every opportunity to get Australians living in Lebanon out of harm’s way.”

He said he did not know how many, if any, West Aussies were set to evacuate.

Police Minister Paul Papalia said there were no protests or applications for any protests in WA for October 7, the one-year anniversary of the ****** ******* *******.

“The day after the disgraceful behaviour on the steps of the (Sydney) Opera House, immediately after the October 7 attacks last year, the Commissioner of Police (Col Blanch) and myself held a press conference and said, that will not be tolerated in Western Australia,” Mr Papalia said.

“Lawful, peaceful protest is acceptable and expected, but what we won’t tolerate is inciting ********* against fellow Western Australians.”

He said West Aussies have complied with those instructions, and that authorities do not expect the “behaviour that is seen in Melbourne and Sydney”.

“However, I will say if people display ********** insignia or portraits, or indicate that they’re preparing to act in a violent fashion, police will act,” Mr Papalia said.

“It will not be tolerated, and action will be taken.”

Local Government Minister Hannah Beazley, in Perth on Saturday for a separate announcement, said there is “no place for *********” of any kind in the WA community —including at any protests surrounding the Middle East conflict.

“Everybody has a right to protest — as long as it’s peaceful,” Ms Beazley said.

“There is no space for ********* of any kind, in any part of our community — and through protests as well.

“I know that WA Police are keeping a really close eye on what’s happening with that protest and what the behaviour will be like there.

“I really sincerely hope that we don’t see some of the appalling behaviour that we have seen on the east coast.”

Friends of Palestine WA called the snap protest just two days before the anniversary of the October 7 *******, with similar rallies planned around the nation.

The actions have come under intense political scrutiny, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton both saying there was no place for celebration or commemoration of ***** Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

Ms Beazley said it was essential that WA’s way of life did not change.

“WA is one of the most beautiful and one of the most peaceful places in the world to live, and we all should be working to keep it that way,” she said.

“Our government has always been committed to people’s right to protest. It is a democratic right to do so.

“But it is not a democratic right to instil ********* on the community, and that’s where the line is drawn.”
