Should You Release the Phantoms or Terminate Pod Life Support?

In Starfield, sometimes your choices come with serious consequences, and this is especially true in the Starfield DLC, Shattered Space.

One of the most intense moments comes during the final main quest, The Scaled Citadel,’ where you’re faced with a difficult decision: Should you release the Phantoms or terminate pod life support?

This choice comes with its own set of challenges, and while it might seem a little intimidating, we’re here to walk you through it so that you make the choice that’s best for you.

Anasko Va’ruun will make you question your morals in this Starfield quest.

This critical decision takes place during ‘The Scaled Citadel,’ the last quest in Starfield‘s Shattered Space DLC. You’re finally going to start seeing the consequences of all the decisions you’ve been making throughout the DLC plot.

The fate of the Va’ruun and even the entire Settled Systems rests on what you choose to do in this quest. As you work your way through ‘The Scaled Citadel,’ you’ll encounter many challenges—it’s not a final quest without some epic battles and hard-hitting dialogue, is it?

And, right, when you think you’re nearing the end, Anasko Va’ruun, one of the early leaders of House Va’ruun, presents you with a difficult moral choice, which is where this guide will come in handy.

Will you unleash the Phantoms, allowing them to wage war on the galaxy? Or will you shut down their life support, preventing the destruction, but angering Anasko in the process?

How to Reach the Decision in the Scaled Citadel Quest

You’ll need to complete a series of tasks before reaching the part of the quest with the choice.

At the start of ‘The Scaled Citadel,’ your first task is to ***** the Mourning Device. Once you’ve done that, you’ll meet with Malibor Dul’kehf, who will guide you toward the next objective: reaching the Scaled Citadel itself.

On the way there, you’ll face off against more Phantoms and Vortex Horrors, so be prepared for a ******. Carrying some of the weapons on this list will make things easier.

Once inside the Citadel, you’ll encounter Anasko Va’ruun. After a conversation with him, the next part of your mission takes you to the Reactor Level.

Your goal is to end the security lockdown, which requires cutting through a wall and using a Digipick to access a vent. Afterward, you’ll need to ******** a modulator and override the lockdown using the computer.

From here, you’re almost at the point of decision. Once the modulator is destroyed, you must replace the Vortex Interlock to continue. Anasko will then ask you to follow him, and this is when the big choice you came to this Shattered Space guide for comes up.

Are you going to save the universe, or unleash chaos?

This is it. Anasko reveals his plan to unleash the Phantoms on the galaxy, justifying his actions by saying that the Va’ruun have been betrayed by outsiders, and deserve to strike back. Now, the choice is yours whether you want to help him in his violent plan or shut it down before it begins.

Tip

No matter the choice you make, you’ll need a ton of restoratives and ammo to survive this encounter, so stock up.

If you choose to release the Phantoms, Anasko is thrilled, but the Phantoms will break out and you’ll need to ****** your way to the Pinnacle. And even though you’ve just set them free, the Phantoms will still ******* you.

Once you reach the Pinnacle, you’ll have to decide whether to ******* Anasko or submit. Submitting results in your ****** and forces you to restart from your last checkpoint, right before the decision.

On the other hand, if you choose to terminate pod life support, Anasko becomes hostile immediately. The same scenario of fighting Zealots and heading to the Pinnacle plays out, where you’ll ultimately need to ***** Anasko and overload the Vortex Gate. The Phantoms will still ******* you along the way, so go figure.

Ultimately, your decision won’t change the overall outcome of the mission, but it will affect Anasko’s attitude and the dialogue in these final moments.

You can approach this choice from your character’s perspective, go for the option with the most interesting dialogue, or simply choose the path that feels easiest for you. And hey, if you’re curious, you can always reload your save and explore both outcomes.

That wraps up one of the big decisions for this quest. If you’re not impressed by the lack of actual consequences, don’t worry: The fate of House Va’ruun and the Settled Systems ***** in the choices you’ll make further down ‘The Scaled Citadel’ quest.
