Melbourne Max Gawn doesn’t know what’s happening with teammate Clayton Oliver’s mooted move to Geelong

Melbourne captain Max Gawn says he’ll “be there” for Clayton Oliver “no matter what” as his future at the Demons hangs in the balance after a midweek meeting with Geelong players and officials.

Cats star Tom Stewart said the meeting with Oliver, who is contracted at Melbourne until the end of 2030, “was good”, with new reports suggesting that Melbourne could now want to keep the four-time best and fairest.

Oliver reportedly walked away from the catch-up with Geelong players keen to move to the Cats, and without knowing what the future held, Gawn said he was perturbed by the number of apparent leaks coming from people close to his Melbourne teammate.

A decision is likely to be made on Oliver’s future before Melbourne’s best and fairest on Friday night, and Gawn said he would “love” him no matter what happened.

“My role in this is people ask for my opinion, but I don’t sit in list management, and I don’t want to sit in list management,” he told Triple M.

“I can share my opinion – which I’m not going to share now – and in fact, I’m getting a little bit annoyed about how many of our opinions are getting out, so that is quite concerning and something we will need to address.

“I love Clayton the player, but I love Clayton the person a whole lot more. I’m going to be there (for him) no matter what, throughout anything, good or bad. I hope Clayton knows that.

“Sometimes you can think your captain is involved in a few things … I promise I’m not, I’m there to put my arm around Clayton.”

Stewart didn’t hide the fact that Geelong would love to add Oliver to their list.

“Obviously, any sort of talent we can attract to the club is important for us, so I had the opportunity to meet with him and it is an interesting thing for me in my stage of the career, but it went well, he’s a good man,” he told 7News on Thursday night.

“It’s not really pitching anything, it’s sort of enlightening him as to what we’re about as a footy club and the things we hold dear and really value.

“There are a lot of things that need to happen for the potential deal to get done, but as I said earlier, if we can attract talent to the club, that is what we are about.”

The AFL free agency market opened on Friday morning, with Josh Battle’s move from St Kilda to Hawthorn confirmed as well as GWS veteran Nick Haynes’ shift to Carlton.
