Warmer-than-usual weather boosts retail sales in August: ABS

Warmer-than-usual weather helped to boost retail sales by 0.7 per cent in August.

The *********** Bureau of Statistics on Tuesday said this followed growth of 0.1 per cent in July, and 0.5 per cent in June.

“This year was the warmest August on record since 1910, which saw more spending on items typically purchased in spring,” ABS head of business statistics Robert Ewing.

“This included summer clothing, *******, outdoor dining, hardware, gardening items, camping goods and outdoor equipment.”

Across the country, retail turnover rose 0.4 per cent in WA, 0.7 per cent in NSW and 0.9 per cent in Victoria.

“While the eastern mainland states led the rises, most States and territories benefited from the earlier-than-usual spring temperatures,” Mr Ewing said.

“Although, some unseasonal rainfall over parts of Western Australia dampened sales slightly.”

More to come.
