Hickmott to guide Kambalda’s GFL fortunes in 2025

Kambalda officials have moved swiftly in their planning for the 2025 Goldfields Football League season by elevating Toby Hickmott to the senior coaching role.

The appointment wasn’t a total surprise, given Hickmott was the Eagles’ assistant coach, under Ryan Fisher, for the second half of the 2024 campaign.

Hickmott joined Kambalda in 2017 after moving from Victoria.

He quickly stamped himself as one of the Eagles’ most consistent and popular players, underpinned by Goldfields selection in 2018 for the annual country championships in Perth.

Also that season, he was named on the interchange bench in the GFL’s team of the year.

However, his best was yet to come.

In 2019, Hickmott was among three GFL players — alongside Mines Rovers’ Jordan Delbridge and Kalgoorlie’s Cam Symonds — who lined up for WA Country at Optus Stadium in a memorable nine-point victory against South Australia.

More accustomed to playing in the midfield, Hickmott was used as a defender in that clash and was among WA Country’s best players.

That year Hickmott was the ****** runner-up for the Peter Ding Medal, awarded to Kambalda’s fairest-and-best player.

Announcing the appointment on social media, Kambalda officials said Hickmott brought “an impressive background in football, and understanding of the club, community and our people”.

“Looking ahead, coach Hickmott is eager to develop a competitive and unified team,” the statement said.

Kambalda were a powerhouse in the GFL during the 1970s and 1980s, when they appeared in nine grand finals and won three flags.

It included three consecutive grand finals from 1983-85.

The Eagles’ last premiership was in 1985, under the late Maurie Lee who ***** in 2021.

Lee also coached Kambalda in 1986.

But the league team did not appear in another grand final until 1993, when they lost to Mines Rovers, coached by former Eagles champion Colin McIntyre.

They also made the grand final in 2008, under Stan Ward.
