What to watch: Take Five, Joan, Heartstopper and the truly OUTRAGEOUS Aussie Shore

Aussie ShoreThursday, streaming on Paramount Plus

It’s rare I find myself lost for words when reviewing a series, but honestly: what to say of this locally produced Aussie Geordie Shore spinoff?

It’s outrageous. And I say this as a long-time fan of the original British series, which first burst onto screens back in 2011, shocking audiences and making household names of its original stars in the process.

What they got up to looks positively quaint when compared with the shenanigans playing out in this, our first local version, which was filmed earlier this year in Cairns with Charlotte Crosby presiding over the chaos as “House Boss”.

And at the risk of sounding like a pearl-clutching middle-aged Karen, I was shooketh!

They truly are an outrageous bunch, dropping C-****** left, right and centre, tallying up their “body count” (if you don’t know what this means —

it! Actually, don’t), flashing flesh and hooking up.

There’s a reason this is airing on a Ten’s streaming affiliate and not on its free-to-air counterpart — it makes Big Brother — Up Late look positively G-rated in comparison.

Something tells me the show’s young audience (this is, after all, who this MTV series is aimed at) will lap up every moment of this.

It’s well cast, with many of the participants, though undeniably crass and attention-seeking, also thoroughly likeable — Catia is a star in the making.

This is the show you’ll love to hate.

Take FiveTuesday, 8.30pm, ABC

This delightful TV spinoff of the long-running podcast series just keeps getting better and better. There’s something about the format — and Rowe’s fantastic interviewing skills — that manages to elicit genuinely enlightening conversations, taking the show in beautifully unexpected directions. This season sees Bill Bailey, Claudia Karvan, Dannii Minogue, Casey Donovan and Bernard Fanning opening up — and it’s fabulous. Music fans: don’t miss this one.

Sophie Turner is front and centre in this new miniseries, set against the backdrop of the “fun, brash, aspirational world of 1980s London”. Joan is a devoted mum who leaves a disastrous marriage and reinvents herself as a jewel thief. Sound implausible? This story is based on the implausibly true tale of Joan Hannington, a woman who did just that, then wrote a memoir about it. There’s lots of buzz building about this one — mark your diaries.

Such a shame they didn’t film this drama, set in Perth in 1979, in Western Australia — local audiences will be able to tell immediately, which is a shame, as it detracts somewhat. That said, it’s still worth a look, if only for Radha Mitchell and Jesse Spencer, who play a married couple navigating great change in their lives, and in the world itself. There’s a lot happening in Perth at the time, and it’s fascinating to revisit this strange time in our history. Worth a look.

TV love stories don’t get much sweeter than the one that’s been playing out over two seasons between Charlie (Joe Locke) and Nick (Kit Connor). Season three picks things up with the young couple navigating the next phase of their relationship and their lives, and it may not be smooth sailing as Nick begins to understand the extent of Charlie’s mental health challenges. This lovely twosome deserve a happy ending, surely? Adore this series.
