Pro-Palestine Australians to rally amid ceasefire calls

Pro-************ Australians will take to the streets as conflict in the Middle East intensifies as the first anniversary of the Gaza war looms.

Rallies are being planned in cities including Sydney and Melbourne across the weekend in response to *******’s mass strikes on Lebanon.

******* Defence Forces expanded attacks beyond Gaza’s borders and into Lebanon after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to keep hitting designated ********** group Hezbollah with “full force”.

More than 600 people have been ******* in the strikes on Lebanon and *******’s offensive in Gaza has ******* almost 42,000 people, according to Gazan health authorities, since a deadly ******* on southern ******* on October 7.

Next week will mark one year since ****** – designated a ********** group by the *********** government – attacked *******, ******** 1200 people and taking more than 200 hostages, according to ******** authorities, and sparked the latest conflict.

The anniversary is expected to prompt gatherings of Australians on both sides of the conflict, including a candlelight vigil in Melbourne’s Federation Square.

Hostilities between ******* and Hezbollah ramped up this month with the two parties trading cross-border strikes.

Hezbollah has fired hundreds missiles at *******, including its commercial hub Tel Aviv, although its aerial defence system has limited the damage.

This weekend marchers will gather on Sunday at the State Library in Melbourne and Sydney Town Hall, and in smaller cities and towns to protest the escalation of the conflict across Lebanon’s borders.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Australia backed the call by the ******* States for an immediate ceasefire in *******, Lebanon and Gaza.

“The calls are very clear … you have the ******* States, Australia, the ******* Kingdom, Canada … all calling for a de-escalation of this conflict,” he said.

“We are very concerned, and the world is concerned about the escalation that is continuing here and the consequences for it.”

Foreign Minister Penny Wong took the push to the ******* Nations and spoke on the need for a two-state solution that allows Palestine and ******* to exist side by side.

“We need a ceasefire in Gaza and a ceasefire in Lebanon,” she said on Thursday in New York.

“The current course being taken will not bring enduring security and prosperity for either Israelis or Palestinians.”
