How to Sell Survey Slates

As an explorer of humanity’s final frontier, Starfield requires the player to perform several tasks, some more important than others. Given Bethesda’s liking for complex game systems, one such exists within the space-faring odyssey in the form of Survey Slates.

The acquisition and usage of these items are not explained in much detail in the game, and this might lead the player to ignore them entirely. However, this would be a major miss on your part, as Survey Slates can be sold for a pretty penny to help you on your journey.

How to Acquire Survey Slates in Starfield

Surveying a planet in Starfield requires the player to carry out both orbital and on-the-ground scans.

While not on the same level as No Man’s Sky after all the updates, Bethesda has included over 1,000 planets in the game for the player to explore. The player can choose to land on any planet they discover, and there is adventure around every orbit. However, as a member of Constellation, one of your primary goals in Starfield is to increase humanity’s knowledge.

Growing our collective knowledge requires records of new planets obtained by completing surveys on the planet. You can do this by scanning all of the planet’s Flora, Fauna, and Resources, similar to how Frank must take pictures to acquire all PP stickers in ***** Rising Deluxe Remaster. The extent of scanning will depend on whether the planet is inhabitable.

Planets that are barren aside from rocky resources can be scanned pretty quickly. However, if a planet sustains life, you will need to get the various kinds of animal and plant life in your surveys, including Traits, which can be found at Unknown map markers.

As you do this, the information will be added to the Survey Data section in your inventory. While it may be interesting to go through, you can’t use this information for anything other than light reading material. Leveling up your ‘Scanning’ skill will give you better zoom capabilities and increase the distance from where you can initiate a scan, helping you save more time.

Keep in mind that simply detecting a planet or moon via the global scan system in the star map won’t create new Slates to be sold. However, you can make detecting rare planets much easier by investing several ranks into the ‘Surveying’ skill.

Once you have scanned every category on the planet to completion, requiring several scans of each entry, you will be given a Survey Slate with the name of the planet you just scanned.

How to Sell Survey Slates and to Whom?

Vladimir will give you the most bang for your buck for every Slate.

Once you have your Survey Slates in hand, it’s now time to cash them in. Pretty much any merchant in the game will accept these Slates, but you can also choose your merchant based on the types of planets you have surveyed.

There are two main vendors to whom you can take these Slates, depending on whether the planet can host life, and more might be introduced in Shattered Space.

The first vendor you can sell Survey Slates to in Starfield is Phil Hill, a worker at LIST in Cydonia on Mars. Phil is trying to find information on habitable planets in the universe to help other colonists establish a foothold and expand their network.

This vendor will only accept Slates from habitable planets, so the barren ones will be in your inventory for a little longer. However, there is another vendor that many players might prefer.

Vladimir is considered the best vendor to sell Survey Slates to in Starfield, as he will pay more than other vendors. He can be found on the space station in orbit around Jemison, named The Eye. Vladimir will take Slates from habitable and barren planets, but there is a catch.

The player won’t meet him until they have completed a few missions in the game. Thankfully, the Slates don’t add much weight to your inventory, so you can hang onto them until you meet this merchant.

You can even game the Starfield merchant system with Vladimir using Survey Slates of gas giants. When you enter the orbit of one such planet and scan it, you will automatically acquire the Slate. Do this for several gas giants and then speak to Vladimir.

As he does not discriminate on the kind of Slate you are selling and shells out over 1,000 credits per Slate, it’s a quick way to improve your monetary situation.

Now that you know how useful these Slates can be, get out there and start surveying. What aspect of the game’s exploration has interested you the most so far? Let us know in the comments below and check out our other Starfield guides to become an adept space explorer!
