Perth weather: Thunderstorms, damaging winds and hail forecast with a gloomy Grand Final weekend ahead

Parts of Perth are expected to be hit with a thunderstorm on Thursday afternoon as temperatures across the State plummet.

Despite a sunny Thursday morning with clear skies, showers are expected to roll into Perth tonight with the Perth Hills receiving the brunt of harsh conditions.

Bureau of Meteorology community information officer Daniel Hayes said showers across the state were on the way and the regions were in for a generous soaking.

“There will be reasonably widespread showers across Perth in the five to 10mm range,” he said.

“There is potential for heavier showers in the western parts of the Goldfields and Esperance.”

There is also the chance of a severe thunderstorm this afternoon and evening, with damaging winds and even large hail possible in the north-east.

Mr Hayes said temperatures in Perth city and Midland would soar to 28c and 31C on Thursday, but things were expected to change drastically tomorrow.

“It will be significantly cooler tomorrow and the temperature will drop about 10 degrees.”

There is a “very high” chance of rain most likely in the morning and afternoon with about three to 15mm expected to pelt down.

Mr Hayes said most of the rainfall should come through on Friday but Saturday’s AFL Grand Final revellers shouldn’t rule out a sprinkle.

“Rainfall may even persist into Saturday afternoon, it’s somewhat hit and miss” he said.

“But, the main rain should come through on Friday and it probably won’t have too much of an impact on Saturday’s events.”
