Udderly insane stat shows cows still king in Harvey with the town labelled the ‘meatiest in WA’

Cows are still king in Harvey, with the majority of the South West town’s residents revealed to be working within the beef industry.

Statistics from the *********** Bureau of Statistics’ 2021 census revealed 17 per cent of Harvey’s residents were working in the red meat processing industry, making Harvey Beef the biggest employer within the regional town.

These stats have led the *********** Meat Processor Corporation to dub Harvey WA’s “meatiest town”.

The analysis comes as part of the AMPC’s More to Meat campaign, focused on the role the red meat processing industry plays in boosting economies in rural towns across the country.

Data from the ABS indicates Harvey is one of 245 suburbs across Australia where red meat processing is in the top five industries for employment, and part of an even smaller demographic of 75 suburbs where red meat processing is the primary employer.

The AMPC said Harvey Beef’s influence extended beyond Harvey, employing people from surrounding areas and being a vital part of a supply chain for businesses across the South West.

According to the AMPC, Harvey Beef’s influence on the region created jobs in agriculture, transport, packaging and retail services.

AMPC chief executive Chris Taylor said the meat processing industry also provided a range of skill levels for employees, with critical hands-on positions working together with skilled qualifications and university degrees.

“The success of the local processing industry is good for the whole community because it creates jobs right here while also supporting flow-on economic activity into surrounding industries,” he said.

“There are positions for all, so you can meet young people straight out of university, working parents, or even those in management positions.

“When you visit a processor, you get a true understanding of the local population.

“As an industry, we’re proud to be a part of regional Australia, creating a variety of different jobs. If you are prepared to learn and want to gain qualifications along the way, then red meat processing would be a great fit for you.”

Harvey Beef general manager of processing Daniel Briggs said Harvey Beef was proud to work closely with the Harvey community as a major source of job creation in the region.

“We have been part of this wonderful community for more than 100 years and are happy to support local events and groups such as schools and sporting clubs, and are thrilled to be major sponsors of the Harvey Bulls,” he said.

“Harvey should be proud to be Western Australia’s largest beef processing town — and an important centre of food production for both the State and further afield.”
