Every *********** state to cop huge drenching over the next week

Every *********** state will cop a drenching in the coming week, with several months’ worth of rain forecast across just a few days.

Rain has begun developing in the country’s northwest, and is expected to impact the country over the next week.

The northern part of WA copped rainfall on Saturday morning, with conditions expected to intensify through the afternoon and evening.

The Bureau of Meteorology says the downpour is being fuelled by an influx of tropical moisture moving in from the north.

BoM meteorologist Angus Hines said the rain in the northern parts of WA was “very unusual” for this time of year.

“Places might see about 20mm or more … we could see some of those spots see 50 to 70mm over the course of the weekend,” he said.

“If we do see those numbers come through, we’re likely to be talking about wet weather records, because getting rain in this part of the country at this time of year is very unusual indeed.”

Hines said the wet weather could impact travel, with rain washing out some roads, making them impassable.

“Because of the sparse network of roads out here, that can add big detours to travel times,” he added.

“Rivers may see river level rises and we may start to see some flooding across the country’s northwest, either this weekend or potentially into next week.”

Thunderstorms are also forecast in South East Queensland on Saturday, including Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.

However, BoM says the storms are not likely to be severe.

The rain from WA is expected to move across the country in the coming days, getting dragged into the Northern Territory and South Australia on Monday.

Hines said in some places the rain intensity will drop; however, heavy rainfalls are expected on the border of the Northern Territory and Western Australia.

On Tuesday, the rain will move towards the southeast through Adelaide before mixing with a cold front and bringing downpours to Victoria and Tasmania.

“We still expect to see the heaviest falls across the northeast of the country,” Hines said.

On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, rain is expected to spread to the eastern states, particularly NSW.

“It’s still several days away, so there’s a bit of uncertainty as to how much wet weather may occur,” Hines said.

“So this is early days for this weather system developing this weekend and going for the next seven days or so.”
