The ABC has ordered an independent review into its own conduct after a bombshell 7NEWS Spotlight investigation revealed audio used by the public broadcaster was allegedly altered to paint special forces veteran Heston Russel as being a war *********.

ABC Managing Director David Anderson confirmed an inquiry had been commissioned into the broadcaster on Friday after a letter concerning doctored audio was received in November 2022, but never raised with his staff.
