Experienced cop admits stealing evidence money

An experienced NSW police officer has admitted stealing evidence money and is facing the prospect of soon being locked up.

Senior Constable Tracey Lee Butler faced the NSW District Court on Friday, when she pleaded guilty to an act of misconduct as a holder of public office following the theft of cash seized as evidence in police investigations.

The 57-year-old was arrested in 2022 following an investigation by officers from the NSW Police Professional Standards Command into reports of financial misconduct.

Following the plea, prosecutors made an application for Butler’s bail to be revoked.

That decision will be made following a hearing on October 11.

Butler’s lawyer told the court a large amount of psychiatric evidence would be tendered when determining her sentence.

Following her arrest, the senior constable’s employment was suspended without pay.

NSW Police has been contacted for comment on her current status.

A sentence hearing has been set down for December.
