Victoria Cross recipient Keith Payne’s emotional return to East Kimberley community of Warmun

He was awarded Australia’s highest military honour for repeatedly going back into a battle while seriously wounded to save the lives of his troops.

But Vietnam Veteran and Victoria Cross recipient Keith Payne credits the Gija people from the East Kimberley for saving his life, more than 30 years after that fateful firefight through cultural healing which helped him deal with the traumas of war.
