Is Sea of Thieves Free to Play? – Answered

With the announcement that Sea of Thieves is coming to PlayStation 5, the bustling pirate community is about to grow exponentially. But many new players find themselves with questions about the live-service pirate adventure. Namely, is Sea of Thieves free to play? How much does the game cost?

Unfortunately, Sea of Thieves is not free to play. The pirate action-adventure game requires buying a copy, though it’s not the $69.99 price tag we’re accustomed to with new releases.

While Xbox hosts regular trials, and you can play Sea of Thieves on Game Pass, it’s unlikely these features will translate to PlayStation 5. There’s word that Game Pass is coming to other systems, though, so perhaps it’s just a matter of time!

Sea of Thieves has a box price of $39.99, though it goes on ***** regularly for around $9.99. It likely won’t be on ***** at the PlayStation Store for quite some time, though, as this is a new release on PS5.

Furthermore, besides the box price, cosmetics and a battle pass can be purchased if you want the whole experience. It’s a live-service game through and through, so prepare your wallet.

You do not have to buy a ship in Sea of Thieves. You can start a party, choose your ship size, and essentially “borrow” a ship from the game’s vendors. However, you can also buy a vessel of your own.

By purchasing a ship using in-game gold, with a cost of up to 500,000 for a Galleon, you can customize the Captain’s Cabin, purchase Captain’s Voyages, and sell treasure to a singular merchant instead of to unique Trading Companies.
