Lansing boys shot Tuesday were Sexton High students on way home from school, officials say

LANSING — Two teenagers who were shot Tuesday afternoon outside Riddle Elementary School on the city’s west side were Sexton High School students, district officials confirmed in a statement to families Wednesday morning.

“It is with heavy hearts that we inform you about an upsetting incident involving two of our Sexton High School students,” Superintendent Ben Shuldiner said in the statement. “Yesterday, as they were walking home from school, they were seriously injured.”

Both victims were 16-year-old boys, Lansing police said. One of the victims was listed in critical condition and the other in stable condition, police said Wednesday.

The ********* happened about 3:15 p.m. at the intersection of Riddle and West Allegan streets, just yards from the northeast corner of the fenced-in schoolyard. Police blocked off streets surrounding the area late Tuesday afternoon, including the section of Riddle between Chelsea Avenue and West Allegan, along the eastern edge of the schoolyard.

The ********* took place in the Westside Neighborhood, where a 14-year-old was shot and ******* in May. The president of the Westside Neighborhood Association, Heath Lowry, said residents are concerned about the *********.

“It’s making us want to build a stronger neighborhood,” he said.

Residents have considered block-by-block neighborhood watches and bringing in experts in teen **** ********* to help them stem the ********* in the community, he said.

“I still feel safe,” he said. “These shootings are clearly targeted, not random.”

In a letter to parents, the Lansing school district said Riddle was placed in restricted access Tuesday afternoon, meaning families could pick up students.

Riddle Elementary School’s release time for students was listed at 3:50 p.m. on the district’s website. Some parents were seen about 4 p.m. in personal vehicles arriving to pick up students. Several buses showed up at the school shortly after 4 p.m. and children were loaded into the buses.

In the district’s statement, Shuldiner expressed sympathy for the victims.

“It is with heavy hearts that we inform you about an upsetting incident involving two of our Sexton High School students. Yesterday, as they were walking home from school, they were seriously injured,” he wrote. “This news has deeply affected all of us, and our thoughts and prayers are with these students and their families as they continue their recovery. We know that this situation may raise concern and worry throughout our community, and we want to assure you that we are here for you.

“In times like these, it’s important that we stand together to support one another. The Lansing School District is committed to offering resources and assistance to anyone who needs it. We have counselors and support specialists ready to help students, families, and staff who may want to talk, process their emotions, or seek guidance.

“Please do not hesitate to reach out. You can contact any of our school buildings directly or connect with our Office of School Culture at (517) 755-2800. Together, we will get through this as a community,” the statement concluded.

The investigation into Tuesday’s ********* was ongoing, and no one had been arrested, police said.

Anybody with information about the ********* is asked to call Lansing police at 517-483-4600. Police said they would like to hear from any neighborhood residents who have doorbell or other camera images that might be useful in the investigation.
