Prize money boost for stars at 2025 Diamond League

Australia’s pole vault queen Nina Kennedy and discus champion Matthew Denny will be competing for record prize money in next year’s 2025 Diamond League series.

Organisers announced on Wednesday prize money will tip over to more than $US9 million ($A13.2m) in 2025, the highest in its history.

Athletes will make a total of $US18 million ($A26.5m), with top athletes also receiving promotional fees. Male and female athletes will be paid at the same rate, the Diamond League said in a statement.

“The new total is almost a third higher than the sum paid during the pandemic-affected ******* of 2021-2024,” the statement said, adding more will be invested in the athletes’ travel, transport, accommodation, medical and physio services.

Each of the 14 meets of the 2025 regular season, scheduled to kick off in April, will award a total prize money of $US500,000 ($A737,000), with the final in August offering $US2.24 million ($A3.3m) .

“The total prize money per discipline will be between $US30,000 ($A44,000) and $US50,000 ($A74) at the series meetings and between $US60,000 ($A88,000) and $US100,000 ($A147,000) at the final,” the statement added.

The Diamond League’s 2024 season concluded in Brussels last week, with Zurich set to host the 2025 final.
