Sony adopting an option of making a digital only system was a test to see if that side were open to the idea of no more physical games. Im not sure how well the 5D sold (my son has one) but the later revision of the Slim that offered the option of a disc drive was certainly met with some criticisms that have themselves perpetuated as well to the 5Pro. I know people dont want to hear this (and im sure i will see it in the disagrees)… physical media has its bottlenecks and drawbacks. Just being able to hold it in your hands with possibility to resell is not enough of a reason to keep it around. The technology isnt going to improve much at all over the next few years, and the cost of keeping it going is not financially viable for the foreseeable future. Discs can increase in capacity and with that you need new laser technology which is still slow and mechanical (prone to ******** at some point). Cartridge technology (as used in the switch) can increase in size, and with that comes increased costs. Just look at the prices of the different density of flash memory chips on the market. Physical had its place… now its time to move on.
