West Coast forward Jack Darling opens up on ‘pretty good’ meeting with North Melbourne as trade looms

West Coast forward Jack Darling has spoken over his positive meeting with North Melbourne as a trade away from the Eagles looks to be set in stone.

Darling was spotted at Perth Airport after reportedly travelling to Victoria to conduct a medical check with the Kangaroos as the 32-year-old forward looks to extend his career.

Though Darling is still contracted to the Eagles for next season the lure of a multi-year deal from the Roos means he has likely played his last game in the blue and gold.

“It was a pretty good [meeting],” Darling told 10 News.

“I’m just trying to … extend my career and look if that’s another two or three years at North, yeah I think that would suit me and my family well.”

Darling said it’s a tough decision to leave a club just two games shy of the 300 mark but he feels he still has plenty more to give.

“Yeah it is [a tough decision] but I know I’ll play 300 plus games my body is all good so I’m durable so it should be no worries.”

Despite the likes of Oscar Allen, Jake Waterman, Bailey Williams and emerging talent Jack Williams already putting the squeeze on in the Eagles’ forward line, Darling managed to play all but two games for West Coast this year but managed just 22 goals the lowest tally in any of his 14 AFL campaigns.

Despite his dwindling numbers is former coach Adam Simpson says Darling could still play an important role for North, particularly in helping support spearhead Nick Larkey.

“I would suspect North are looking for some experience up forward and someone to help (Nick) Larkey out a little bit, while the young forwards are coming through,” Simpson said on SEN.

“He’s got a lot of K’s (kilometres on the clock), but he’s an athlete. He’s really fit. He’s looked after his body for a number of years.

“When he’s at his worst, he’s getting outmarked. But this year, I can’t remember too many times where he had a day where he got convincingly beaten by a defender.”
