Royals product and Swan Districts high flyer Tom Edwards’ season has come to a crashing end after his side was convincingly beaten by Peel Thunder at Steel Blue Oval in the WAFL preliminary final on Sunday.

Edwards sat out of their last two finals matches after being concussed in the round 21 league fixture against Perth but made a timely return for their blockbuster clash with the Thunder.

It was the furthest the Swans had gone in a finals series since 2012 and backed by a strong breeze they got off to the perfect start with Edwards playing a major part in their five-goal first quarter.

The 24-year-old booted two quick goals in the first term, the second coming immediately after a spectacular contested grab in front of recently delisted Fremantle player Ethan Hughes.

But the Thunder, littered with AFL-listed talent, hit back in the second with a six-goal onslaught as they galloped away to a dominant 47-point blowout victory.

Peel’s dominant second quarter meant the Swans were forced to throw Edwards behind the ball as a spare and he entered half-time as his side’s equal leading possession winner.

As Peel skipped away to the 15.13 (103) to 9.2 (56) win, Edwards was starved of opportunities inside forward-50 for the remainder of the match and ended with 15 touches, four marks and booted 2.1.

Edwards has enjoyed a career-best season at league level, kicking 39 majors in 19 games, which helped earn selection in the WA State squad for the first time.
