Speaking after it was revealed Mr Porter would join the cricketing organisation’s governing body this week, Mr Cook said the WACA was “the master of its own destiny” and could make appointments it sees fit. It comes ahead of the WACA’s annual general meeting this week, where it is expected he will be announced as a board-elected member. “We know Mr Porter is an incredibly intelligent gentleman and a member of the legal community and the WACA have obviously made decisions that they believe are in the interests of their organisation,” Mr Cook said. “The WACA is the master of its own destiny, and they can make appointments how they see fit.” On Monday, Mr Porter declined to comment on the appointment. Since leaving politics at the 2022 Federal Election amid historical ***** accusations against him, Mr Porter has returned to working as a barrister. Mr Porter has previously served on the board of the WACA until 2014, when he became a parliamentary secretary. WACA chairwoman Avril Fahey confirmed the board had resolved to appoint Mr Porter to the vacant position. “The former Federal Attorney-General was first appointed to the WACA Board in 2014, before resigning the position upon becoming a parliamentary secretary to then Prime Minster Abbott later that year,” she said. “After leaving the WACA Board, he assisted WA Cricket to obtain Commonwealth funding for the WACA Ground Improvement Project and played a significant role in securing $30 million. The appointment comes amid a $169 million redevelopment of the WACA Ground, which has been beset by cost blowouts, time delays and disputes over the direction of the project.
