‘There should be outrage’ over ********* against women

A victim of ******* ********* has told BBC News NI there should be outrage in our society over ********* against women and ******.

She’s been speaking ahead of the executive office launching a new strategy to tackle the issue.

The Ending ********* Against Women and ****** (EVAWG) strategy was first proposed in 2021.

Northern Ireland has long been the only part of the *** or Ireland without a strategy on the issue.

‘Shocked’ & ‘horrified’

Haileigh Ashton Lamont, who has waived her right to anonymity, was ********* abused by her step-father as a child.

Haileigh was invited to be part of a consultation panel on the EVAWG strategy in 2021. She has studied the action plan released last year and says she has concerns that not enough emphasis is going to be put on ********* justice solutions and reforms.

“I was shocked, horrified by the reality of the ********* justice system when I went through it,” she said.

“Offenders attitudes aren’t going to change and they’re not going to be deterred from offending if there are no consequences,” she added

“If they know if they do perpetrate and they’re arrested, the likelihood of them getting convicted is very low, or the experience is so traumatising for the victim that the victim could disengage.”

Haileigh says she believes individual politicians do want to end ********* against women and ******, but that there needs to be a more aggressive approach.

“The statistics are shocking, not just ******* *********, what I suffered, but domestic ********* as well.”

“I don’t think that individual politicians don’t want to see an end to this, they do. But there should be outrage. Anyone of us can be a victim, you don’t even need to leave your house, it happens in people’s homes most commonly.”

‘Epidemic of *********’

The executive made EVAWG one of its key priorities in the

which was published last week.

In that document the executive said “We must work together to end the epidemic of *********, ******, and harm against women and ******.”

“Evidence shows that most women and ****** here have experienced at least one form of gender-based *********”.

Since January 2020, 23 women have been murdered in Northern Ireland.

Tackling the root causes of gender based ********* and working on prevention will be key to the executive’s strategy, but the justice system will also have a huge role to play.

Work has been done in this area. The Gillen Review, which was commissioned by the Department of Justice to improve ********* justice outcomes and the experiences of victims, made 253 recommendations in 2019.

Many of the recommendations have been carried out, with changes including limiting the number of people allowed in to courtrooms for serious ******* offences and increasing training for those working within the justice system.

Northern Ireland Women’s Aid have been demanding a strategy since 2021, when they began a petition, they are closing that petition on Monday.

Women’s Aid told BBC News NI: “This crucial step aligns us with neighbouring jurisdictions by implementing a cross-departmental approach to tackling ********* against women and ******.

“Today is a start of change, and we all must continue to work together to help create a society where women and ****** feel safe and are safe.”
