Perth Airport: QF71 tore up main runway after taking off for Singapore, repairs underway

Urgent repair works are underway at Perth Airport after a Qantas plane tore up part of the main runway when taking off on Sunday.

The airport confirmed the main runway was partly operational on Sunday afternoon after a vision emerged of Qantas flight QF71 appearing to damage the runway as it took off around 12.15pm.

In the video, as the plane accelerates from a stationary position, parts of the runway appear to be sent flying into the air.

“Earlier today, pavement damage on the Main Runway was identified in a safety inspection following a departing aircraft,” an airport spokesperson said.

“Pavement maintenance works are now underway.”

Only some departing services were using the main runway due to the damage, with one freight plane forced to make a diversion, the airport confirmed.

“The Cross Runway ******** fully operational,” the spokesperson confirmed.

At the time of publication, no delays were reported.
