Hockey WA Premier League: UWA and Westside Wolves win premierships in dramatic shootouts

UWA have held their nerve in a dramatic one-on-one shootout to win Hockey WA’s men’s Premier League.

Tied 2-2 after both full-time and extra time, UWA goalkeeper ********** Starkie starred in the shootout to seal a 4-2 win and the club’s first top-division premiership since 2017.

Melville star Jake Staines — named this year’s Olympians’ medallist this month — opened the scoring with a diving back-stick strike moments after UWA’s Frank Main had a goal ruled out for a handled ball at a penalty corner.

Perth Thundersticks player Cam Geddes dragged a short-corner shot through the legs of Melville ‘keeper Hunter Banyard.

The Maroons re-took the lead late in the second term when James Day’s piercing ball up the middles led to a brace for Staines.

Kookaburras great Chris Ciriello scored the equaliser from a penalty corner with five-and-a-half minutes to play in the final quarter.

Staines completed his stellar season with best-on-ground honours, despite his double coming in a losing effort.

The match was Melville’s fourth straight grand final appearance and UWA’s Chris Bausor said it was his side’s best performance against the powerhouse club all season.

“(Melville’s) been pretty electric over the past couple of years so I think this year is the closest we’ve got to them over the course of the year so it’s pretty sweet to get it done in the final,” he said.

“It’s a tight contest every time we’ve played them and it honestly could have gone either way.

“I felt like out of all the games this year, this has probably been our best and most dominant against them and I think we had the ascendancy the whole game.

Westside Wolves crushed UWA’s hopes of a senior double by winning a shootout in the women’s grand final.

The decider was goalless at half-time, but both sides scored within minutes of each other just after the break and the game rolled into extra time.

UWA’s Courtney Schonell, who scored their only goal and almost netted again during extra time, was named player of the match.

Kookaburras star Tom Wickham and his partner — and fellow Thundersticks **** — Candyce Peacock, both won premierships on the night.
