Top five travel apps | The West ***********

There are literally thousands of apps that can help make your life easier when travelling.

Here are five of my favourites.

Booking.com

I’ve been using this app for years. As the name suggests, it’s a one-stop travel agent that allows you to book anything from accommodation to flights, car rentals and attractions.

The site has access to more than 400,000 hotels worldwide and there are often special offers with free cancellation and no prepayment needed.

This app is very handy for planning trips by public transport or car anywhere in the world.

It has up-to-date schedules from thousands of operators around the world. You can search any city, town, landmark, attraction, or address across the globe to easily get you from A to B.

It will give you detailed step-by-step instructions for your journey, as well as travel times and costs.

Don’t travel without it! It has helped me out in many locations around the world.

It instantly translates words, phrases, and web pages between English and more than 100 other languages. You can use the camera to get translations of a menu, or use the microphone to record and translate a conversation.

When illness or accidents happen while travelling, it can be a stressful experience trying to find and access medical assistance.

Air Doctor is an easy-to-use app that connects travellers to a global network of more than 20,000 multilingual doctors worldwide so they can access quality medical care anytime, anywhere.

Users can book clinic, hotel and video appointments and get local prescriptions in up to 84 countries and 21 languages.

Splitwise

Who owes who — and how much?

Splitting bills can be a real hassle at the best of times but it can be particularly complicated if you are travelling with a group of friends.

One person may have paid for accommodation, another has paid for the hire car, and you’ve paid for train tickets and some meals.

Splitwise is an easy way to share expenses from a trip. The app allows you to create a trip, add expenses as you go, and split it all at the end.

The free version has some limitations in the amount of transactions allowed daily, but for a modest fee of $4 a month you can upgrade to Splitwise Pro, which has unlimited expenses, currency conversions, receipt scanning, itemisation, and access to charts and graphs.
