AFLW 2024: Four key takeaways from Fremantle gritty win over Port Adelaide

Fremantle are back on the winners list after a strong finish saw them ******* an 8-point win over Port Adelaide at Alberton Oval on Saturday.

Here are our four key takeaways.

1. Playing to the conditions

Tough conditions made life hard for Fremantle who faced similar conditions in their first round win against the ******** at Windy Hill.

Kicking against the breeze the Dockers ******* to score a major in the first quarter for the third straight game as the home side poured on the pressure.

After kicking four goals last week Port forward Julia Teakle was a constant threat popping up early to slot a goal as her side dominated the contest with 26 tackles to the Dockers 8 in the opening term.

Fremantle ruck Mim Strom was a stand out in her side’s win using her athletic prowess to great effect.

Rucking and roving Strom played like an extra mid racking up a game high 18 disposals, nine tackles and and five clearances.

She won the battle with Port’s Matilda Scholz around the ground getting her hands to 32 hitouts and eight intercept posessions.

The Dockers were forced to make a late change with Irish star Aish McCarthy ruled out with knee soreness.

Adding to the absence of Kiara Bowers, the out could have been costly, but countrywoman Orlagh Lally stepped up to plug the ***** seamlessly.

With a game-high 477 meters gained and 18 disposals, the 23-year-old used her run and carry to get the ball moving and combined with Hayley Miller to showcase the depth of the Dockers midfield.

When Fremantle desperately needed a goal it was their vice captain Aine Tighe who stood up to deliver.

Kicking into the wind in the third term the **** forward snapped a crucial major to kick start momentum.

Booting four goals in her sides win against the ******** the Irish star attracted plenty of attention from Ports defence but used her superior height and strength in every contest.

It wasn’t a pretty win and while they trailed for the majority of the game the Dockers persevered to wrestle the lead and steal an important win on the road.
