There, he became internationally renowned as a patron of the arts, hosting visiting anthropologists, actors, writers and artists at his home. Among them was Austrian novelist Vicki Baum, who credited Spies with fact-checking her critically acclaimed historical novel Love And ****** In Bali. By 1937, Spies had grown tired of his fame and yearned to escape from the constant flow of visitors. So he moved to Iseh, a village in Sideman, a dreamlike valley with velvet green rice fields set in the shadow of the Agung volcano in eastern Bali. There, Spies created some of his beautiful and atmospheric paintings, including Iseh Im Morgenlicht. In 1942, Spies was arrested as an ****** alien by the Dutch, the colonial rulers of Indonesia at the time, and deported to Sri Lanka aboard a ship that was bombed by the *********. His body was never found. New-age travellers are now following in Spies’ footsteps, seeking refuge from the hustle and bustle of Ubud and the busy tourism centres of Bali in quiet leafy Sidemen. There are dozens of hotels and villas in the valley, including Villa Iseh, a three-bedroom holiday home the owners claim was Spies’ former mountain retreat, though this has not been verified. The most talked-about place to stay in Sidemen is Samanvaya, an award-winning boutique eco-resort for adults only. Children under 14 are not allowed to stay. Camera IconJoglo Villa.
