Saint-Etienne open French league account with win

Saint-Etienne have finally earned their first points of the season in the French league, causing a mighty upset to beat high-flying Lille 1-0 at home.

The 10-time French champions started at the bottom of Ligue 1 without any points and goals from their first three games, but led Lille after just six minutes and stayed in front.

The visitors had most of the possession and more shots on goal but the home side survived to lift themselves off the bottom of the 18-team table and into 15th place.

It was Saint-Etienne’s first win over Lille since 2018 and it came courtesy of Mathieu Cafaro’s goal when he capitalised after good work from Georgia international Zuriko Davitashvili on the right.
