Adeyemi leads Dortmund to win against Heidenheim

Karim Adeyemi repaid the confidence of his coach with two goals and an assist as Borussia Dortmund romped to a 4-2 win over Heidenheim in the Bundesliga.

“The coach trusted me and I showed that I deserve it. I’m very happy, but especially for the three points,” Adeyemi told broadcasters DAZN on Friday.

The 22-year-old striker first served Donyell Malen on the edge of the box and the Dutchman fired Dortmund’s opener between the posts in the 12th minute. Goalkeeper Kevin Müller touched the ball with his foot, but couldn’t stop it from entering the net.

Adeyemi, assisted by Julian Brandt, then got one himself in the 17th in a fast counterattack after Heidenheim lost the ball in midfield.

The guests pulled one back thanks to Marvin Pieringer’s header in the 39th, but Dortmund found a quick response as Adeyemi was again on target just two minutes later.

Dortmund had a fourth goal into the net after substitute Marcel Sabitzer deflected an effort in the 67th, but it was ruled out due to a handball in the build-up.

Shortly after, Maximilian Breunig converted a penalty to shorten Heidenheim’s deficit in the 75th after Niclas Süle fouled Mikkel Kaufmann in the area.

But Dortmund also had a penalty in their favour in stoppage time and Emre Can put the game to bed.

“After the international break it’s not always easy, but I think we played a good game. In the end, it was a deserved win,” Adeyemi said.

The match marked the debut of striker Serhou Guirassy for Dortmund. The summer signing from VfB Stuttgart missed the first two matches due to a knee injury.

For Heidenheim, it was their first defeat of the Bundesliga season after two wins in the first two games.

“Conceding the first goal in the first 20 minutes was not good, we had imagined something else,” Heidenheim coach Frank Schmidt said.

“Today was unfortunately not enough. But I’m happy that we fought back, we found the right set-up. In the end, we lost, but after the first 25 minutes, which were not good, we sold ourselves for a high price.”
