Kalgoorlie College wins two out of three senior soccer finals

Kalgoorlie College’s dominance in the Goldfields Soccer Association’s senior ranks was extended in Sunday’s grand finals following victories by the club’s A-grade men’s and women’s teams.

Twin City were gallant performers in the A-grade men’s final after conceding an early 2-0 lead, pulling the deficit back to 2-1 by half-time and levelling the scorers with a penalty that forced extra time.

College eventually prevailed on penalties, 5-4.

College player-coach Danny Tebble was in the thick of the action as the team’s goal keeper.

“That’s how it’s been for a few years (in dual roles) but it’s actually easier (coaching) in goals,” Tebble said.

“Going back to when I first did it in 2017, I was out in the field but in goals it’s much easier because you see the whole pitch and see things going on.

“And I’m pretty lucky because I have Cody Minshall on the bench for me as an assistant coach and I can bounce ideas off him.”

Twin City won the B-grade men’s final against College, with College’s women beating Celtic.

“We took away eight of the (combined) nine trophies available across the season,” Tebble said.

“It’s a big effort by the club after we started (training) very early — mid-February officially.

“It’s been 30 weeks all up of training so you put the hard work in and get the the rewards.

“We are hated by every other club, but we work hard and our theory is that we deserve what we get, to be honest.

“The women did the same — they trained hard the entire time so it’s been a club effort.”

Twin City’s men’s B-grade win, 3-2, was welcomed by stand-in coach Matt Taylor.

“As a B-grade team, the main focus is to support the A-grade,” Taylor said.

“But when we can get results like that, it shows that our club has a lot of depth which is something to be proud of.

“Jed Shaw got involved, too, to help me and run things from the bench and in terms of how our squad will look next year, it’s quite a transient group.

“We’re limited to 40 players and a lot of ours work on a week-on, week-off roster so that’s one of the challenges that we juggle throughout the season.

“We have probably seven players who work those rosters and miss basically every second game throughout the season.

“I guess it all came together at the right time.”
