Rod Marsh Wicketkeeping Academy announces second intake of players ahead of 2024/25 season

WA’s elite wicketkeeping academy, named in honour of the late great Rod Marsh, has announced its second season intake, with three new names added to the list.

The next generation of keepers is set to get up to 36 specialist sessions across the upcoming 2024/25 season as they vie to push towards representing their state and country.

The Academy was initiated last season as a way to remember the incredible contribution of WA legend Marsh and boost the development of West Australia’s emerging female and male keepers.

Outstanding premier cricket seasons from Freya Lumb (South Perth), Max Nelson (Subiaco-Floreat) and Wynand Basson (Bayswater-Morley) have seen the trio awarded their first program scholarship while Joel Curtis (Perth Cricket Club), Joseph Kelly (Melville Cricket Club), Veronica Keen (Midland-Guildford Cricket Club), Simon Budge (Melville Cricket Club), Josh Nathan (Willetton Premier Cricket) Club, Alyssa Dermody (Perth Cricket Club) and Ada Papallo (Perth Cricket Club) all return.

The Academy has already achieved positive milestones, with Curtis having represented the Scorchers during their Top End series last month after claiming a First Grade flag with Perth, while Budge has been selected for Australia’s Under 19 squad, which will tour India later this month.

WA Wicketkeeping Coach Damon Rowan will spearhead the Academy for a second consecutive season, with support from former WA Women’s player Angele Gray, Scarborough gloveman Riley Mattingley and Andy Greig.

The youngsters will also have access to coaches within the elite state pathways, including WA men’s assistant coach Travis Birt and state development coaches Tim Edmunds, Brian Shields, Adrian Harris, and Ryan Hosking.

Current Scholarship holder Joseph Kelly will be the Next Generation Coach for the program, offering a perfect chance to develop his leadership.
