City of Kwinana wins WasteSorted award for Face Your Waste, Street by Street campaign

The City of Kwinana has been recognised for its efforts to help residents recycle and reduce waste.

It won the community engagement award at the WA WasteSorted Awards on September 5.

The award was recognition of the city’s Face-Your-Waste, Street-by-Street program, which encourages residents to confront their recycling habits.

Neighbours were brought together at their bins during a series of events, where city staff provided information and answered questions about waste and recycling.

Mayor Peter Feasey previously said the Face Your Waste activity “demystified bin-tagging and recycling”.

“More than 95 per cent of people surveyed said they felt more confident sorting their recycling after the event,” he said.

“The bin audits helped educate people on correct waste-sorting behaviours and it was great to see residents get together to see their verge gardens tidied up, increasing a sense of community pride and neighbourhood connection.”

The city was among 40 finalists across 10 categories, with winners announced as part of the State’s annual Waste and Resource Recovery Conference.

Environment Minister Reece Whitby said the winners were examples of what achievements could be made when striving “towards a sustainable, low-waste future”.

“These awards are a positive way to recognise and celebrate the great work being done by those who have committed to waste generation, increasing recovery of valuable materials from waste, and protecting the environment,” he said.

The city plans to continue the Face Your Waste program in 2024-25.
