A wheelchair-bound resident has retold the moment he armed himself with a hammer to help save a woman and dog from a vicious mauling in Innaloo.

On Sunday afternoon a woman walking a Maltese Shi Tzu was attacked by two large dogs on Donar Street. It is reported the woman was temporarily caring for the Shi Tzu while housesitting before she was charged down and attacked by the two animals.

Resident Russell, who is in a wheelchair, immediately rushed to the scene after hearing the woman’s screams.

“The dog was getting torn to pieces and I had to step in,” he told 7NEWS.

“I gave him a few blows with a ball peen and they stopped attacking.”

After neighbours pulled the injured dog to safety, it was rushed to an emergency vet.

The dog has since undergone surgery for its injuries while the woman was given a tetanus shot.

An ********* ****** Staffy and a ****** Mouth Cur were seized by City of Stirling Rangers as an investigation into the incident continues.

The owner of the animals told 7NEWS she was sorry for the incident and that she understood why they were taken away.

The fate of the animals ******** unknown.
