Fremantle star Emma O’Driscoll says Dockers can’t wait for someone to step up after humbling loss to Adelaide

All the talk may be around their men’s side lacking a genuine matchwinner, but Fremantle AFLW star Emma O’Driscoll says that exact issue was behind their goalless round two defeat.

The Dockers were thumped by 33-points at the hands of the Crows at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Sunday in a disappointing follow up to their solid opening round win over the ********.

With senior players Ange Stannett and Kiara Bowers unavailable for the season, it was clear that the team had become reliant on their experienced leaders to get them into games.

Speaking on The West ***********’s new Dubya podcast, O’Driscoll — who has played 47 games since her debut in 2020 — said it was crucial other players started to step up if they were going to win a flag.

“We talk about actions speaking louder than words and I think at the time we probably didn’t have enough people stepping up,” O’Driscoll said.

“We had a few passengers and that’s detrimental against good teams like Adelaide.

“I think we were waiting for it to happen or probably waiting for someone else to do something.

“And I think that’s the key messaging … we can’t wait.”

Fremantle will be looking to bounce back against Port Adelaide at Alberton Oval on Saturday and O’Driscoll said she was confident a six day break would work in her side’s favour.

“It’s a quick turnaround but we know that we can make the changes that we need to make heading into next week, and actually do that quicker, rather than later,” she said.

“I think otherwise, we’re just dwelling on the last performance.

“Going into next week we really want to just go back to that hunting style, winning the footy first, and also then using our numbers to support rather than just relying on someone.”

O’Driscoll hails from a passionate football family, with her brother Nathan a Docker and other sibling Aiden having being picked up by the Bulldogs this season before he was forced to retire aged 18 because of concussion.

And while she admits it’s great to have feedback from fellow footballers, O’Driscoll said she only had one rule — it must be positive.

“I don’t think we’d be the people or athletes we are without each other either, there’s not only that competitive push, but there’s also that level of understanding where they get what it’s like to be a professional athlete,” she said.

“I respect them and I respect that their their feedback is coming from a good place as well to try and make me not only feel better, but also be better.”
