Ontario Peak Perks: Get paid to save energy.

In the summer of 2023, Ontario launched an initiative called Peak Perks aimed at transforming how residents and businesses use electricity. This program incentivizes participants to reduce energy consumption during peak hours, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable and resilient energy grid.

Peak Perks focuses on managing energy use during peak hours, typically when demand for electricity is highest, such as late afternoons and early evenings. Participants are encouraged to shift their energy usage to off-peak hours through a variety of incentives.

Some of the incentives include rebates and credits on utility bills. Participants will also receive a $75 prepaid Mastercard and will receive an extra $20 for every additional year they are enrolled in the program.

, consumers must have access to smart meters or compatible devices that allow them to monitor and manage their electricity usage effectively. Eligibility is generally open to most residential and commercial customers in Ontario.

The thermostat adjustment periods occur only on weekdays for up to three hours from June to September. Ten adjustments will happen over this time. During each event, the thermostat will be adjusted automatically by no more than 2 degrees Celsius to

. The thermostat will return to its original setting when the event is over. Participants can also choose to opt out of an event directly on the thermostat app, website, or thermostat itself.

Participants in Ontario Peak Perks stand to benefit significantly. By adjusting their energy consumption habits, they can potentially save money on their electricity bills. The program’s incentives not only help reduce immediate costs but also promote long-term energy efficiency. The justification for choosing summer months as electricity reduction events is that the demand hours during these months tend to be associated with the highest costs for power. And especially as the country continues to deal with numerous heat waves and the increase in air conditioning usage, electricity bills are rising as a consequence.

consumption during peak hours has a positive environmental impact by lowering greenhouse gas emissions associated with electricity generation. This aligns with Ontario’s commitment to combat climate change and promote sustainable practices.

The Peak Perks program plays a crucial role in enhancing the reliability and stability of Ontario’s electrical grid. Decreasing demand during peak periods mitigates strain on the grid infrastructure, thereby reducing the risk of power outages and brownouts. This proactive approach also supports the long-term

of the province’s energy infrastructure.

The Ontario Peak Perks program is delivered through the Save on Energy brand and isn’t just for homeowners. Programs and incentives are also eligible for small businesses, large businesses, contractors, and Indigenous communities.

future. By rewarding consumers for reducing energy consumption during peak hours, the initiative not only benefits individual participants through potential cost savings but also strengthens the province’s energy grid overall.

This new program will help meet the province’s emerging electricity system needs by providing annual electricity savings equivalent to powering over 130,000 homes every year and reducing consumer costs by over $650 million by 2025.

Looking ahead, the expansion of Ontario Peak Perks could further amplify its impact, encouraging more Ontarians to embrace energy-efficient practices. As the program continues to evolve, its role in promoting environmental stewardship and energy conservation will remain crucial. This program can also encourage other provinces to take part in reducing emissions across the country.

By supporting initiatives like Ontario Peak Perks, the province is paving the way for a greener tomorrow, where responsible energy use is rewarded, and sustainability is at the forefront of everyday decision-making.
