Montgomery Public Schools to go on as normal after online threats

Montgomery Public Schools students will attend their normal classes Monday, though MPS officials announced Sunday they are aware of social media posts that suggest threats to local schools.

“We take these matters very seriously and have activated all safety protocols, including working with local law enforcement to identify those involved and take appropriate action,” wrote ***** L. Jones, senior communications officer with MPS, in a statement released Sunday. “Schools will continue to operate on their regular schedules, with our priority being the safety of students and staff. We appreciate the community’s prompt reporting of this issue to both local authorities and the school system.”

MPS sent the statement by text to students’ parents Sunday, and posted it on its social media as well.

Neither the exact nature of the online threats nor the identity of the suspect who created them have been released by MPS. The Advertiser has reached out to Montgomery Police seeking more information.

In Elmore County, Superintendent Richard Dennis said Sunday that Elmore County Schools dealt with two instances this past week, one at Wetumpka High School and one at Stanhope Elmore High School, relating to threats or potential threats made by students.

“Those incidents were handled by school administration, local law enforcement and parents of the students,” Dennis said.

In Autauga County, no threats have been received or made in the past week, through social media or other means, said Superintendent Lyman Woodfin.

Both Dennis and Woodfin said that if threats are made, steps will be taken to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Montgomery Advertiser reporters Alex Gladden and Marty Roney contributed to this report.
